A simple recipe for 2012

Years ago my parents took my two siblings and I vacationing on a farm. I think they wanted to give us a change from the usual city-touring in a European capital or the occasional fancy beach resort and teach us the value of simplicity. We stayed in a small chalet, went on hikes everyday, ate simple meals and inhaled plenty of cow poo aroma. Needless to say all three of us kids hated it.

Around the same time my dad came up with the phrase: Simple things are the best. He would throw it at us each time we would complain about the simplicity of a meal, a family outing, a gift, etc. We kids also started to use it but in a sarcastic way. Each time one of us was complaining about really anything, the two others would put their finger up in the air and lecture her/him: Simple things are the best!!

About 20 years later, I realize the wisdom in my dad’s words. As I have been around the world and lived in so many environments I have truly come to appreciate the gift that simplicity is.

Simplicity doesn’t just reveal the beauty and value of material things. It applies to all sorts of life situations. So here’s my simple recipe for you to truly enjoy the beauty and value of life in 2012.

_____________________________________

You want to have lots of money? Don’t spend the one you already have.

You don’t know what gift to give to someone? Give them your time.

Not sure want is wrong with your body? Listen to it.

Want something so badly but don’t know how to get it? Ask. You’ll be surprised at  the results.

You want to forget all your trouble and worries? Serve others.

You want a new perspective on life? Go on a trip, even if just around the block.

Not sure where to start? Start right where you are.

You want to change the world? Start with your neighbourhood. (Do you even know your neighbours?)

Want to find love? It’s where it’s always been, inside of you.

Want to see the world for free? Go to an airport and watch the world landing and taking off under your eyes.

Want to find your vocation? Ask your inner five-year-old what she enjoys doing most.

Want to tell someone you love them but not sure how? Cook a meal for them.

Want to make friends? Start by being a friend.

Nothing makes sense anymore? Breathe.

Want to find your strength? It lies right next to your weakness.

Want to learn about JOY ? Spend time with kids.

Want to learn about TRUST? Spend time with animals.

Want to learn about PATIENCE? Spend time with old people.

Want to learn about FORGIVENESS? Spend time with family.

Lost and confused? Pray.

“Wherever you are is always the right place. There is never a need to
fix anything, to hitch up the bootstraps of the soul and start at some
higher place. Start right where you are.”
